When the soil starts warming in North Canterbury, everything happens at once. A good spring clean-up channels that rush of growth in the right direction. Start with the obvious: clear winter debris, cut back the last of the dead perennial foliage, and get mulch off the crowns of plants that are shooting. Lawns need the mower back on a regular round, with the blades set high for the first cuts so spring growth thickens the sward instead of stressing it.
Feeding in spring pays for itself. Lawns, roses, citrus and hungry shrubs all respond to a balanced feed as growth resumes. Weed now, too, while winter weeds are flowering and summer weeds are still seedlings. An hour with a hoe in September saves ten hours in December. It is also planting time: hardy annuals, new shrubs and replacement hedging establish quickly in warm soil with spring rain behind them.
Do not forget the prune. Anything that flowered in winter or early spring can be trimmed straight after blooming, and roses should have had their main prune by the time shoots are racing.
